So far I’ve seen a few of them in my home. All but one where in the bathroom, the other was on the kitchen counter (EEEEEK) I can handle finding a few bugs on the bathroom floor every once in a while, but NOT on my kitchen counter!!!

I have tired looking at many on-line sites that identify insects but I haven’t seen this one on any of them. When I do generalized searches it keeps bringing up silverfish, and that is NOT what they are.

I keep all food in tight containers. All sugar, Flour, breads and like items are kept in the fridge. My kitties and ratties food are stored in "insect proof" containers (they even said that on the containers when I bought them). My kittie’s food dish is the raised kind thats up off the floor and the legs are all coated in slippery stuff so a bug can’t climb up it if it tried. My ratties food dish in her cage is at least 5′5 of the floor (the top of the dish is above my head)… her cage itself is over 3 feet tall and made of wire (bars) and is sitting on top of a stand so I doubt a bug could make it to the dish. We are forever cleaning in our home and I spray the outside of the windowsills and doorways with outdoor insect spray (its meant for gardens, fruit/veggie crops.. I didn’t want something extremely toxic, even though all bug killers are toxic obviously) about once a month, or more if we get a heavy rain. This is mostly just because red mites love my building. I also use a few "home remedies" around the house to try and deter bugs from coming in/staying here (no clue if they work or not but heck I’ll try just about anything.

So needless to say I don’t like insects in my home, and do anything I can to keep em out.

PLEASE help me figure out what these insects are so that I know what I need to do to keep them from wanting to come in and how to go about getting rid of them. Thank you for any help you can give!!!

* It is about the length of a pencil eraser.
* Its black metallic looking.
* No wings.
* No antenna from what I can see.
* No visable legs, even though I’m sure they have them
* Pretty thin in width, but slightly tapered from one end to the other.
* Moves fast and in random ways, like it will be going one way and then it looks like it almost just bends over itself or something and goes the other way (very fast). I almost want to say it looks like it is swimming but without the water.
I have no clue what a forestry station is, but I’m pretty sure there are none around here.
Oh and I’m in New York if that helps any (not NYC).
Thanks for the pictures, but nope none of them.

If it wasn’t for the fact that I’m not the only one who has seen them I would think its all just in my head. No one knows what they are, even the bug killing places around me have no clue. I’m going to need to *glup* catch one in order for anyone to be able to help me.

maybe a black species of one of these?

If you’re looking for something online, Google Book Search had a 2005 book, "Hydroponics – Indoor Horticulture" by Jeffrey Winterborne:

http://books.google.com/books?id=9-YgbkclzOUC&dq=book+hydroponics&pg=PP1&ots=gP8TcI2z7L&sig=O_6EKUt4KUv82P88Hf3OP500lzc&hl=en&prev=http://www.google.com/search%3Fhl%3Den%26q%3Dbook%2Bhydroponics&sa=X&oi=print&ct=title&cad=one-book-with-thumbnail#PPP1,M1

And at Botanical.com there was a list of Hydroponic Books you might look over.

Have you tried your local library yet? Or you University/College library?

The only thing I could find on aquaponics though was at this website:

http://www.aquaponics.com.au/books_aquaponics.htm

You might check their About Us page:

http://www.aquaponics.com.au/about_us.htm

And try contacting them if you have any specific questions.

*~ Good luck ~*

A Jewish friend of mine is out of town for the summer, and I’m mowing his lawn while he’s away. He’s getting married in August, and as a wedding gift I wanted to plant them a little herb garden in a spot in the backyard that’s now just a bunch of weeds. This guy is an amazing cook, and he’s also extremely proud of his ethnic Jewish heritage, having already introduced me to several traditional Jewish dishes, etc. So, what are some herbs commonly used in traditional Jewish cuisine? I’m going to plant a variety of herbs, but I don’t want to omit anything that would be most useful in a traditional Jewish kitchen. I’m planning to mostly plant perennials, but a few annuals would be fine as well. Thanks!

By the way, I think his family is from Poland.

I’m Jewish & I love to cook, and I have an herb garden. I use a lot of garlic, chives, oregano, basil, dill, parsley and lavender. I think you are a great friend! You are very thoughtful and caring. I’m sure he will use and love what you plant! I use the herbs from my garden all the time! I am of European/Jewish descent as well.
