So I decided I’m going to purchase a hydroponics grow box to grow my own. However there seems to be so many manufacturers that make them I can’t figure out which one to buy. What would you recommend looking for when purchasing a hydroponics grow box?

I would say either go with the Homegrown Hydroponics grow box or a Quickgrow grow box. Those are the two best in the industry.

I’m not sure I understand how CO2 can help my plants grow better. The guy at the hydroponics stores said that CO2 can enhance my yields. Does CO2 really help my plants grow better when using hydroponics?

Yes. CO2 is very helpful are growing plants in hydroponics. It will definitely speed up your plants growth rate considerably. The reason being is that plants will store a lot of energy that can not be properly utilized with low amounts of CO2. The more CO2 and your company are the more your plants can use the built up energy and grow faster. A song excellent video tutorial on the proper use of CO2 at this website called homegrown hydroponics. It was a very helpful video for calculating the proper CO2 levels and also talks about the benefits of using CO2 in hydroponics.

So I decided I’m going to purchase a hydroponics grow box to grow my own. However there seems to be so many manufacturers that make them I can’t figure out which one to buy. What would you recommend looking for when purchasing a hydroponics grow box?

That is a really good question. Like you said there are a lot of manufacturers out there that make grow boxes and sell them for a pretty penny. However a lot of them do not work as well you would hope. When looking to purchase a grow box you should try to find one that has as much lighting as possible. Because light equals to yields. You want to make sure that the light is air cooled so the grow box will not run hot. Some of the larger manufacturers like BC Northern Lights or Supercloset has a reputation for their grow boxes running extremely hot due to poor ventilation. Make sure when you buy a grow box to get one that has really good ventilation. Get a grow box with as many fans as possible to avoid heat that will seriously hurt your plants. its small and i just got it. its in my room, not outside. its also in a small pot. thanks!!

i would say when you feel it and its dry mist with water. Also keep it in a not so sunny area. This is the thing Moss loves dampness but when it get to wet you don’t want mold. Mold loves dampness to.

Good Luck

any cool ideas for indoor herb gardens? and what herbs are easy to maintain. i kill all of my plants…

A Yahoo search for "indoor herb gardens" (include the quotation marks in the search box) yields 1,200 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, I’m sure that you will quickly find the information you seek.

By the way, chives are hardy and easy to grow indoors.

Good luck with your search.

lettuce, peppers and peas but I don’t want to do more than I can handle. So any advice about the easiest items to grow or tips would be helpful. Also, I do have a small covered porch area that’s always warm.

Thanks for reading : )

For an indoor vegetable garden
Easiest items to grow:
cherry tomatoes, they don’t take as much energy (light and time) to harvest
peppers- I would get a smaller pepper. they have mini bell peppers
peas-will most likely need a trellis to support the little buggers
lettuce-there are two types. one is to grow a head of lettuce, where you harvest the whole head at one time, the other is a pick and pull variety, where you can harvest smaller amounts throughout the plants life cycle, as long as you leave the inner new leaves.

I’m not sure which place you are thinking to grow b/c indoor and outdoor were mentioned. But if your porch has direct sun I would try out there, free light and heat. Put your lettuce in more shade than your tomatoes and peppers and peas.

Indoor, you may need to purchase a grow lamp, www.nationalgardenwholesale.com has these available for purchase from a local retailer most likely.

I hope that helps a little bit. you can email me with any other questions if you like

I’m growing an indoor herb garden, and I recently transplanted basil, parsley, sunflowers (I know, not an herb), and chives to bigger pots. The sunflowers and basil have very long stems but few leaves on each stem, and they don’t stand as they should. The chives are not standing properly either. Any advice or suggestions?

water them good and give them good light. they are in shock from the move. they should get over that in a few days.

I am new and have never grown with hydroponics before. I have been studding them and a water culture system sounds like the easiest to get started on. Will tomatoes and peppers grow in a water culture setup or should I try something else?

I am not in to hydroponics but you might want to look at this site " squarefootgardening.com". If you are looking for a way to grow things cheaper and easy, low tech, less space, less water, least amount of labor,no heavy equipment, all you need is a $1.00 trowel, etc.

Just wondering what do i do with the existing hydroponics nutrient when i need to change the nutrient solution. I know for organic solution i can use it on garden plants and veggie patch, but what about the inorganic salt based nutrients?

I would suggest you dilute it down a bit with some plain water and then pump it out and use it on your outdoor plants. As long as you are not dumping it into the same spot every time you change nutrient solutions you should be ok. I run an outdoor hobby NFT system and occasionally I will clean out the nutrient tank by diluting what’s left in the tank and then pumping out over the grass. The grass loves it!
