I’m not sure I understand how CO2 can help my plants grow better. The guy at the hydroponics stores said that CO2 can enhance my yields. Does CO2 really help my plants grow better when using hydroponics?

Yes. CO2 is very helpful are growing plants in hydroponics. It will definitely speed up your plants growth rate considerably. The reason being is that plants will store a lot of energy that can not be properly utilized with low amounts of CO2. The more CO2 and your company are the more your plants can use the built up energy and grow faster. A song excellent video tutorial on the proper use of CO2 at this website called homegrown hydroponics. It was a very helpful video for calculating the proper CO2 levels and also talks about the benefits of using CO2 in hydroponics.

So I decided I’m going to purchase a hydroponics grow box to grow my own. However there seems to be so many manufacturers that make them I can’t figure out which one to buy. What would you recommend looking for when purchasing a hydroponics grow box?

That is a really good question. Like you said there are a lot of manufacturers out there that make grow boxes and sell them for a pretty penny. However a lot of them do not work as well you would hope. When looking to purchase a grow box you should try to find one that has as much lighting as possible. Because light equals to yields. You want to make sure that the light is air cooled so the grow box will not run hot. Some of the larger manufacturers like BC Northern Lights or Supercloset has a reputation for their grow boxes running extremely hot due to poor ventilation. Make sure when you buy a grow box to get one that has really good ventilation. Get a grow box with as many fans as possible to avoid heat that will seriously hurt your plants. I am new and have never grown with hydroponics before. I have been studding them and a water culture system sounds like the easiest to get started on. Will tomatoes and peppers grow in a water culture setup or should I try something else?

I am not in to hydroponics but you might want to look at this site " squarefootgardening.com". If you are looking for a way to grow things cheaper and easy, low tech, less space, less water, least amount of labor,no heavy equipment, all you need is a $1.00 trowel, etc.

Just wondering what do i do with the existing hydroponics nutrient when i need to change the nutrient solution. I know for organic solution i can use it on garden plants and veggie patch, but what about the inorganic salt based nutrients?

I would suggest you dilute it down a bit with some plain water and then pump it out and use it on your outdoor plants. As long as you are not dumping it into the same spot every time you change nutrient solutions you should be ok. I run an outdoor hobby NFT system and occasionally I will clean out the nutrient tank by diluting what’s left in the tank and then pumping out over the grass. The grass loves it!

I’ve never been able to find a site with good free instructions, but I have made every kind and size of hydroponics and aeroponics system, so if you drop me an email I will send you instructions and walk you through it. I am in the process of writing a book on how to make affordable systems for every use, so I have a ton of professional illustrations and instructions already written out. I use them for everything from herbs on a window sill to tropicals in a poison dart frog vivarium to 4′ habanero pepper plants on the patio, and it’s a fun and easy way to grow.
