Indoor Herb Garden

There is essentially no direct light, mostly in shadows, but in this stage of construction I can wire for and use anything that would work. I think it would light up the dark area under the stairs and create a nice herb garden near the kitchen - but no idea about how to light this, any help would be appreciated, thanks.
