Shining growing lights low from the side of my herb garden?

I would like to start a herb garden in my kitchen. Unfortunately I do not have any windows in my kitchen so I will need to get some growing lights. I do not want to have to look at growing lights while I am cooking so I want to try to hide the lights. The only place that I can hide the lights mounting them horizontally 10 inches off my counter. The only problem with that is the light will be hitting my plants from the side. Will this be ok? Also the lights will almost be touching the soil that the plants are growing in. Is this ok? Do you think It will work?

That seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to without being sure of the result. The lights are going to heat the soil, so that isn’t good. Plants will also turn towards the light, so yours will be bent if they get big enough to bend.
Haven’t you got another window in the place where you can grow things?
I afraid you’re in for disappointment otherwise.
